EPISODE 3 RECAP

to hear the results of the inquiry into the assassination of the Crown Prince's best friend The court, collects, Artists Shin Heung-bok. (RIP Seo Joon-young! Sniffle.)

Crown Prince Lee Sun police had appointed captain as head of the investigation, because he has a reputation for honest and dogged. the skirts the partisans bickering between Norons and Sorons, each of which control of the case, particularly the Norons wants the ordered the murder. But the seemingly incorruptible police captain Hong Kye-hee has a significant Achilles heel, and under political pressure, he reigns Heung- bok death a suicide.

Sun calls for the results, but the police captain Hong has done a thorough job. Not only does he have a plausible theory (the Heung-bok throat on the way down broke) to paint it false testimonies Heung-bok as drunk that night, and spits slandering the royal family gave.

The king is pleased that the police heard Captain did as commanded. The things worse, he sends in a decree declared Heung-bok a traitor, in response to the defamation charge. As befits a traitor, is Heung-bok be beheaded, confiscated his property, and made his family members in the government slaves.

sun struggles to absorb all of this, and if his advice pushes him to come to a decision, he orders them to clear out so he can think. He asks politely at first, but if they do not comply, he breaks in, they leave.

Ji-dam can be heard by Heung-bok suicide ruling and is disturbed at the unpredictable direction of the investigation. You vents to a gisaeng, WOON-SHIM ( Park Hyo-joo ) and said accusingly, that their advice was wrong. Woon-Shim had that a certain officer Min Woo-sub was honestly told why she had given him her statement. She had trusted the police to take care of the matter, but now she is to take matters into their own hands and investigate.

Nevertheless Woon-Shim was quite Officer Min, who is outraged at his decision the police captain and argued that the investigation was inadequate-performed there, a witness was, Heung-bok looked to be murdered. Captain Hong counter convincing that the witness may have been falsified (Ji-dam), and that it in a game could not catch Noron-Soron Does he want to fall prey to their tricks?

officer Min was informed of the requirement laid it holds: everything leads to their conclusions to follow, and only rule, when all doubt has been cleared. He remembers captain Hong that he was the very person who taught him this. Captain Hong can not hold his gaze.

Sun reads sent via Heung-bok final message to him to the night he died. It makes no sense that he would promise to come see him, and then kill himself. Turning Heung-bok in a traitor posthumously is an added insult.

And so, Sun begs his father to allow the case to be re-examined, and insisted that Heung-bok itself would never kill, yet he would defame the royal family. King Yeongjo challenges "How would you know that?" Sun says that he as Heung-bok, a dear friend who sends the King in a fit of anger-how could a humble man, as the dare to be friends with the prince?

Yeongjo sneers at Sun, but calmed down and throws carelessly from: ". Well, do it" He is to examine the permit again and Sun lights up with hope. He sets off immediately for the bridge in the direction where Heung-bok was to make the book messengers.

The Noron politicians are angry to hear that the case is still open, and Prime Minister Kim Taek charging to see the king. How will they keep that secret document (which the Norons and Yeongjo involved in a business, presumably to kill the current king) safe when the investigation keeps going? King Yeongjo cavalier attitude annoys the prime minister so much that he barks, "Hey! Lee Geum" What is-it through the equivalent of a slap in the face is incredibly ballsy for someone to use the name of the king, and Prime Minister Kim talks to him on it in banmal down. He must be pretty safe in their alliance feel to venture such an offense.

Kim reminded the king that they are bound together as a co-conspirator, and have for the last 30 years. He warns: "When we die, you also die."

No historical courtroom drama would be complete without a secret society of conspirators, and we meet our Noron group as convened leadership under Prime Minister Kim. He explains: "The war begins now."

The chief eunuch of the king warns him about the resumption of the investigation of the guides that the king keep up with Prime Minister Kim works. Yeongjo only asks why the eunuch he accepts was against Kim ago: "I do not treat Kim Taek as an enemy I chose him as a teacher of the prince.." I ... pretty sure I do anything with the want to do would teachings.

Ji-dam arrives at the bridge, they retrace steps of that night. By the water's edge, where they saw the body farm, they found the wooden book lending tag that fell by the wayside, as Heung-bok died and to find crows to himself for the key. While I accept their joy a little off-putting, I I can not find it, see how it's just a mystery to be out confused.

Sun leading a team of officers on the bridge, only Ji-dam is missing, as it leaves it. The bridge is the starting point of the investigation, and thence Sun sends its officers to find out as much information as possible. He gives special instructions to find the book and the day that would have been in Heung-bok possession.

recognized One of these elements themselves, but Ji-dam is made with a new thought: She has Heung-bok-day, but where is the book

section: the book, by pushing them in a secret compartment wall ... teacher Park Mun-su? Whaaaat. I thought you were one of the good guys! Obviously, this drama tells us there is no such things as evident good guys when the nonpartisan teacher hiding evidence Park and keep secrets.

At least thinks our prince shrewdly, think that the book messenger saw something that night. Sun sends his officers to leave to the secret message drop-off point a note.

is picked up by any This memo gisaeng Woon-shim aha! It is their gibang where the drop-off point is hidden, and when she reads the message, the content will turn into shock her gasp. Why is the Prince of Ji-dam looking for?

teachers Park Mun-su on the bridge comes sun to see, and is to sow seeds of doubt by the question of whether the investigation is a good idea. Sun replies that he does not do this out of personal feelings, but because the facts do not add up to captain Hong contradict findings that indicate walking on deeper corruption.

teachers Park says that if this is true, then the people who captain Hong must under pressure be very powerful, as if the prince warning danger not in court. But Sun claims that it does not matter how powerful they are, they have to explain for their crimes.

Despite my concerns about teacher Park hazy fidelity, both the king and the prime minister are concerned when they hear that it helps the prince. (And if they are concerned, I am, at least for now, easier for Sun) Both suspect that Park should know that the secret document resurfaced. The Prime Minister wonders how he knew it in the first place.

search Next comes Sun at the police station in the investigation files. Honest officer Min is thrilled to hear of the reopening of the investigation, which give him the opportunity to address the many suspicious points to address that were bothering him. But before he can respond to the summons of the Prince, he is a family emergency-his father is gone sick.

he only is not really sick. His father is the main sidekick Minister and has his son called home to order it by the case back to step. Officer Min is horrified at the thought that his father interferes in the investigation and refuses to quit. Then Minister Min pulls a knife and told his son it first to kill, and then go. Yeesh. Is it too much to hope for a functional father-son relationship everywhere in this drama?

On Sun station checks a file and is captain Hong chance to speak with the truth, but the captain sticks to his guns. Sun is a testimony-from out Heung-bok longtime artist colleague and friend, Jung-Woon-swore that Heung-bok never had to say a bad word about the license. Should not the study who followed the? How could Captain Hong assert such confidence in his conclusion, as his investigation had clearly huge holes in it?

Sun, the folly of misunderstanding, saying that there is something that is worse -though he leaves the answer for the captain out for themselves.

Ji-dam slips into Heung-bok rooms in the department "royal painter for the missing book to look, but does not find it. Could it be in the hands of murderers, she wonders. Another artist mentioned Heung-bok closest painter friend Jung-Woon, who is gisaeng in a relationship with one. As it happens, know Ji-dam after returning she finds on her treasure gisaeng and the gibang in tears.

for the moment we are to guess the reason. Jung-Woon is currently outside the police station, patterning to approach the nerve. He remembers telling the prince back over the document to Heung-bok words, but the sight of Heung- bok coffin was in fear him shrink back. He leaves quietly.

captain Hong to see barges in Prime Minister Kim, angry that their demands succumb to falsify the investigation, he is now in the hot seat. to keep him in line, pulls Prime Minister Kim from these incriminating documents and asks whether it is necessary to read Hong "those dates" again.

Defensive blurts captain Hong that he only incorrect ruling made it was a mistake to do it, and falsifying documents. Kim says: "He knows." The light dawns captain Hong slowly, he says the king. And that means to block these orders of Prince investigating Yeongjo come himself.

King Yeongjo summons teachers Park that night and tells him things now can surely fall a corpse into a well was enough of a warning. Teachers Park asks the King to put things right, because the power you can build a firm foundation not without. The king reminded him that that's why he asked him before, the document to destroy 10 years. "You can not defeat me," says Yeongjo.

Nevertheless teacher tells Park that he was the prince to tell the truth. The king says cryptically that the wrong person could dead to end warning, "Power a sword. If someone bothers you, it can slash indiscriminately-it is a dangerous thing." He told not to move, the prince upwards (Park " If you do not stop war comes next ") and its door to door" truth game "now.

At the end of the day has nowhere gone to the examination of the Prince. They found no witnesses near the bridge, and have no sign of the book messengers. So Sun gets a picture of Ji-dam working drawing, his only connection to this book lender.

leaves

Go Ji-dam head, her dilemma: it has evidence that on (the day the ticket, and book lending records) could be rotated, but that brings security jeopardized her family since their operation is illegal. Her father Grumps that they can also pass the neck, too.

But they are in danger, either way, because Captain Hong decides that the quickest way to find Ji-dam is to establish more raids. His officers looting shops that night to create a lot of excitement, which is reported on gibang to a worried Woon-shim, and a worried warrior Chul-joo in his gang's home base.

Ji-dam is for the moment safe at home, think of artist Jung-Woon and his gisaeng treasure. Now we see that the gisaeng had wept because Jung-Woon his suspicions of Heung-bok entrusted to the murder and was afraid that he would be next.

That's when officers arrive at Ji-dam gate and start pounding, and they rush to the basement of her father to warn. Quick start working dispel the workshop, while the officers begin to kick in the door. Put duck in a back and a false front to mask the purpose of the room.

While the officers barging in noisily, Chul-joo and his gang on the grounds sneak furtively here to save Ji-dam. We still do not really know his relationship to the family, but every friend of Ji-dam is a man and I'm rooting (which I would swear is true even if Kim Min-jong not play him the actors were).

Officials almost away empty-handed, to their leader, officer Byun, the dull spots covering the hidden trapdoor. Loosen the lever, throwing the door, he leads his men down the stairs to the basement. Gulp.

But they only Ji-dam father sitting find there quiet a book while reading Ji-dam and nestle the workers behind the false wall. Dad feigns ignorance of the illegal book lending ring he give of running defendants, and not a clear answer about Ji-dam whereabouts. This annoys officer Byun who does not buy his excuse for a second (he collects rare books) and begins on the shelves by the volumes twist.

That's when he realizes that the wall feels thin and starts to kick it while Ji-dam and companies pushing back, trying to strengthen the wood. Just when it seems that he could discover the space, gets a girl out for "father" and joins them and pretended to be Ji-dam. It is clearly not who you are looking for, and while officer Byun remains suspicious, it gets for now again. He calls out his men, so that Papa with a warning that he get him eventually.

simply dressed and accompanied only by his chamberlain, Sun visited the gibang and asks Woon-Shim to speak. Showing her the drawing of Ji-dam, he asks for her, the book lending operation speak openly. But Woon-shim is carefully rightly and holding on to her, "I know nothing" line, even if Sun pushes and says he thinks gisaengs helped push Ji-dam.

Woon-Shim remains tight-lipped, and for good reason-after Sun dispatched directs into the next room, occupied by captain Hong. He heard enough to suspect that Woon-Shim is more covered up than it is to admit, and warns that they will be visiting a secret'd better stop here.

in step and save them

Ji-dam father thanks Chul-joo of the raid. There currently is, he wants to take Chul-joo in Ji-dam, as much difficulty would be caught. Ji-dam protests, but ultimately have to agree, albeit reluctantly. falls to read with Dad

Woon-Shim through the house, and sighs over Ji-parent Trouble way. Dad's like Ji-dam Activities like any unnerved, but it's sweet that he in their defense which speaks about so wrong to want to expose the truth of a death? If there is a problem, he throws himself, and not to worry about the world for justice or truth. "There is nothing wrong with our Ji-dam," he says. "Nothing."

Sun the investigation files are pores on the Heung-bok Sketchpad confiscated not under the item was. He makes a break Jung-woon to read testimony.

This is the name of Ji-dam spirit even as they laid in the woods in their temporary hiding place, wondering if he would be safe. Then turn their thoughts to the heroes of their new story, which is just and good, not back, to shrink even in the face of death. The thing that most hates for a wrongful death is to create a different, she explains. "But what about me?" She says in self-reproach. "I'm a coward, hiding here as."

Chul-joo points out that her character is not real, but she replies: ". The problem is that the victims are all real"

The first thing breaks the next day, the sun in the office captain Hong take him for the surprise raid in the middle of the night to task. Captain Hong plays innocent, saying his job, but Sun that he asks accusingly when he really was not trying with his inquiry disturbing because the book calendar girls is an important witness.

We know that's exactly what he did, but captain Hong is so carefully and wisely, that it has a credible answer to that is willing to say that he is only now heard about Ji-mother relevance to the case. He wonders why the prince so suspicious it is as if it is unjustified to ask if it just because the results of his study were not what Sun wanted.

There is enough truth in the sun just to stop. He returns to the palace with a heavy heart to see in time the other witnesses, are released. Sun is outraged that they have not been proven guilty of perjury, exclaiming: "Heung-bokie not good went to the"

But the official, who worked beside him, Chae Je-gong, the prudent logic one and he recalls Sun to the victim can be obtained adequately, not by name, but as the subject of their case. Sun asks if Chae is insinuating that it has lost its objectivity insisted that they are there is no way that Heung-bok could killed themselves consider. But Chae urges him to study properly at the facts, to treat by, not looking for facts the conclusion he wants fits.

Sun claims that it is at least the artists should investigate swear Heung-bok never uttered a word against the Royals, arriving just as the court artists. But he does not find Jung-Woon among them, and it is said that Jung-Woon not seen since Heung-bok death that made him upset. And if nothing else, that is suspicious enough to think they Jung-Woon knows something, either as a witness or suspect.

Unfortunately, Prime Minister Kim is always the same information that the Jung-Woon proposes knew about the secret document. He orders his henchman Jung-Woon find before the Prince is the case, declared him potentially useful. Soon after, we see Jung-woon gisaeng treasure of a faceless man confronted.

Meanwhile teacher Park Jung-woon feel to his hiding place and keeps it at a fixed, terrifying grip. Jung-Woon guesses: "?? It was you, was not it, killing Heung-bok and threw him into the well, is not it"

teachers Park says slightly so, and orders Jung-Woon to go the prince submitted directly to him. "Say all you know with the Prince," he has. "What to me later, let happen." Hm, it does not work sound as he is a murderer confessed; it is strategically? Teachers Park pushes him so he can be found to hurry in danger.

So-Jung Woon falls through the agency of artists and draws a drawing-one that Heung-bok had drawn after taking this document. It comes from court records displayed, showing a royal litter of armed officers surrounded, and as Jung-Woon studied the people in it, it decides that they find out, whoever they are.

When he leaves the building, it is of a man grabbed that his cries muffles. But then he sees that a trio of assassins just been rescued on their way-he. This is the man of the prince, here to accompany him to the palace.

The next day, Jung-Woon is brought in for questioning. King Yeongjo hear this in dismay, and his anger gushes and he spits a name: "Park Mun-su" Teachers Park, now looking over the book Heung-bok had worn when he died.

Jung-Woon trembles when he expected his survey. It is the prince of the method is the head, which means that he would be safe ... for now.

COMMENTS

I was not sure how I completely a would fictitious plot occupy the center of such a known bit of history feel because of this murder investigation reads (he, watches) as pure fiction, not sageuk. But I like it, and maybe this is a way to work the inherent problem, reimagining of such famous historical figures; it is definitely a new interpretation, a dramatization without aspirations biopic status. The nuclear relationship has been taken directly from the history books and woven the politics of the time in the intrigues of the drama of action, but it is quite clear that this is a fusion piece, and I appreciate that the drama is not set to any to be claims otherwise ,

That is, it is also fun to see where it has draw from known facts, and as the author of this drama reality designed from the historical context. History purists may balk at this (hi, Dad!), But I did not cause any problems with it-as long as the show demands on accuracy, the Secret Door do. ( The Princess Man is another example of good where real figures and historical events are used as the background for a clear fictional main story.)

teachers Park Mun-su offered an interesting twist this episode I was glad to see that I did not want to get stuck as Noron or Soron in a black and white representation of people, just or corrupt, good or bad. There are plenty of emotion in his scenes with the king and prince to suspect that he. Ultimately a man of integrity, but he can be reached certainly not above it or hiding things his goals, which puts him in question mark territory As he reaches the line up to the two parties share that does not mean that he is as much impartial, since it means that it on both pages that at various points, and we are left ask what that means. Ten years ago he was the man entrusted to Yeongjo to destroy the document, and he was the teacher of the Prince in all these years. But he is Soron, and the king has made his pact with the Norons. Will he prove to be a politician in the end? Or maybe it is the other extreme, and so idealistic that he be placed particularly the ideal of the land, even individuals as the King and the Prince. Who knows? It is in the air, and I'm excited.

I wonder how long the drama Ji-dam holding off all desperate to find them if they bring or show what they know to silence. On the one hand I want Sun to find their right quick because I add the feeling have their meetings and partnership with a zing the drama that I'm really anticipate. But on the other hand, when they meet, what happens next feels quite predictable, and I want to maintain a certain tension, while we have it. And Ji-dam while seeking light and justice, experienced a conflict that I want to explore while remaining in hiding, feeling weak and fearful and do not like the brave hero writes about.

But on the other side (yes, my third hand), I would totally watch to see their meeting Sun whether he is measure to this heroic ideal or short as well (but in an endearing way!). Finally, it is him the wisp has label. This momentum should be nice.

In any case, we get less of the father-son conflict in this episode, but I do not think that necessarily a bad thing, as we have in the all the drama, that to play. It is pretty much the whole tag line, in fact. So I'll take this easier, fast pace, fleet stories while we have it, because I only have so much heart to break. Do I have to save for when it really hits
