Is it too early to say that I'm in love with a show? I'm excited and relieved, because while I for the best was hoping I was certainly aware that Cantabile Tomorrow comes with a lot of luggage, and that even in a good case scenario, it fought an uphill battle , The original material is so loved that it would be difficult to measure its standard, let alone dare to surpass it.
I always want a drama to be successful, but I approached with both optimism and hesitation, not only because I really enjoyed the previous versions of the series (Anime and J-drama, I have the manga not read). I will argue that perhaps the cult of the show can exaggerate about how good it is, so I would encourage a new audience, with so open mind as possible to go in; there is always a risk that the existing Hype Your opinion against a show color can be just as easy as it could be dyed for them.
But on top of the problem of the hype, I was concerned for the way, not told in Nodame Cantabile its history fundamentally different from K-dramas generally; it is quite easy and character-based to allow simple plot for several episodes points forward to and gives music a much greater presence than many typical drama country spectators patience. I remember watching the anime and think that I essentially was seven minutes Rachmaninoff observe without history progress played, but I was tied up all the time. I was not sure that the same thing might work in K-Drama.
I can happily report that not only Cantabile Tomorrow honor this aspect of the series, it may even improve the effect. Is that blasphemous to say? The action beats were almost beat-for-beat replications of the original, and yet I still felt agitated and swept, and the feeling that maybe added this version also on the emotional depth. I have always loved the characters, but this drama gave my heart an extra twist, and I am curious what that means.
law it can happen.

EXERCISE 1 RECAP
A little boy running through the streets with a violin on his back, while his telling older self, musing about how thoughts of his childhood on the streets of Europe, full of classical music take him back again and again. as the son of a pianist, he had seen far in his youth and numerous appearances traveled, "But the greatest achievement of my life in Korea was . "
this boy perform an orchestra watches, spellbound by the movements of the head." the moment he drew his wand, I knew "he says." the fact that this man would be my lifelong teacher. "
So the boy, CHA YOO-JIN, sneaks into the rehearsal room with the indication that a violin out of tune. the conductor Sebastien Viera (Cameo showing the orchestra practice to see his musical precocity of Israeli conductor Yoel Levi), takes a liking to Yoo-jin and takes him under his wing, and a year later it is time for them to separate. Yoo-jin crushed, but Maestro Viera hands him stick his conductor's and assured him that he would take on as formal student Yoo-jin when he comes to study in Europe.
But if we catch up to the adult Yoo-jin (played by Joo-won ), it is not in Europe. that holding wand, he asks himself: "The teacher Viera, what am I doing here?"
Yoo-jin goes through the campus of his school, Haneum Musikhochschule, where his arrival caused a stir among his many admirers. They are full of praise for him, but he has only irritation for the cacophony of error-plagued game got to him, like his ears to pick out every little mistake. His brow furrows continue to read a message, to study a senior student selection announcement in Berlin. He scoffs, not impressed by the students skills.
The guy comes from nearby and takes the opportunity to boast, just throw in Maestro Viera name, to make it stand out a little more. It remains to Yoo-jin mind when he violently plays in his piano lesson; he sees himself in a dream-like sequence, hike the woods while on his teacher to call for help. He asks: "What should I choose it feels like I have lost my way?."
Yoo-jin teacher hits his head with a fan barking that he his emotions ran away with his game deserted. The name of the teacher is Thu Kang-jae, but the students refer to him more often than Buchae (Fan), per his method of discipline.
doteacher noticed mixed piano music score with a Yoo-jin, and that explains Yoo-jin curious lack of interest in competitions and indifference in his teaching; his interests lie elsewhere must. Yoo-jin argued back that he never wishy about his game was, though he does despise teachers the cookie-cutter teaching style-it's designed a student to obtain competitions and nothing to gain, as if students the and awards to collect for his personal honor.
do
Furious, teacher ejects him and threatens Yoo-jin marketed to have. Yoo-jin does not look too devastated, and indeed afterwards fills a voluntary withdrawal form.
As he does, from a studio, the sound of a Liszt piece (Liebestraume No. 3) blowing from to control his attention. "Not bad," he thinks. He wonders who the pianist and heads inward to find out, but before he can, he interrupted.
Meanwhile, the pianist SEOL NAE IL ( Shim Eun-kyung ), continue to play, completely caught up in the music. She looks happy, and when she is ready, she sighs: "Oh, it's so good!" I would laugh at lack of modesty, if I only agree not fully.
Then it has recalled that it has a part ~~ POS = TRUNC to obtain and rushes off in a kindergarten class, where she plays the piano with a funny story she told to the class.
Meanwhile, Yoo-jin has a drink with his girlfriend, CHAE DO KYUNG ( Kim Yumi ). She tears his withdrawal form upwards ( "That again?") And tell him to make do with a teacher because he is the best and that his best way to personal success. Or he may transfer to the conducting department. Or if he's with Viera so keen on studying, so he can go to Europe.
But it is not as easy it for Yoo-jin, he endured the horrific plane Lives ride as a child, a massively traumatic event that plagues today still. He shakes his memory and asks Do-Kyung to spend the night with him, because he does not want to be alone, but she is tired of him ( "If you are so weak?") And breaks with him on the spot up. drink Grimly, he holds
That night, Nae-il comes to their building and does not go so far beyond the unexpected sight at her door. Yoo-jin, settled, drank dead on the floor. It calls "sunbae" (ie must have known it) and tried to stir him awake. This does not work, so they look for alternative solutions.
Morning Yoo-jin, the sounds of a piano-Liszt listen again and dreams of in a quiet, sunny field. But when he wakes up fully, he screams in terror because he sitting in a mountain of garbage. And he is shirtless! When did that happen?
There is not a dump but when he thinks restarted Nae-il's apartment, crammed with garbage to the gills. Old packaging, half-empty food containers, flies buzzing everywhere. And in the middle of everything, incongruously, is a wing.
Nae-il welcomed him happy, and their comments about what worrying last night anmutet suggestively: "Do you really not, or are you just pretending not to forget?" Yoo-jin stutter that may have nothing happened, then flips as cockroaches skitter out by (Nae-il: "Hello, cockroaches!"). He runs out the door, and now realizes that his own apartment is right next door.
Yoo-jin tries to wash the crawlies feelings away and the insinuation recoiling that something is happening, that he has forgotten, he wants his brain, "Don ' t remember! "
at school, teachers do rants to employees about expelling Yoo-jin, the acting, the other teachers are reluctant, are on it their number one student and the son of a famous pianist. The diplomatic Dean, Song Mina ( Yeh Ji-won ), steps in to finagle compromise they can transmit Yoo-jin of teachers do (best) to teacher Ahn (... not the best ). At least, it will send a message to Yoo-jin.
Yoo-jin is a paranoid mess of nerves on campus, said nothing has happened with Nae-il. And then, a voice yells: "Sunbaeeeeeee!" And it bounces her race toward him, to see threshing limbs.
she pouts (loudly) "Why did you suddenly leave in the morning I was sad!." Oblivious to the amount they draw and the obvious misinterpretation her words, she presented him with his freshly laundered shirt. Yoo-jin tries to pretend ignorance, but that only makes Nae-il try harder, his memory on the jumps.
The eccentric teacher Ahn do checks with teachers that he is doing well abandon the school's most talented students. Teachers do with Yoo-jin done, however, and washes his hands of it. Teacher Ahn Nae-il sees in the distance chasing after Yoo-jin and muses that he has "a very special student" and wonders if that could put them together in a duet. Have mocks that Yoo-jin would not do it, so Ahn proposes a wager.
teacher Ahn has taught a good reputation for the worst students, but he has got a good character, which may make him the perfect fit for Nae-il. In lesson he goes along gamely, as they are really together provides two peas in a pod, a song about farts-it. Yoo-jin, on the other hand, looks at his new teacher out the window and grimaces to see what he is going to work with.
For more characters! Bleached blonde YOO IL-LAC ( Go Kyung-Pyo ) is awakened out of bed by his father, owner-chef YOO WON-SANG ( Ahn Gil-kang ). Il-lac dresses like a rocker, but playing the violin, and while he. Not without skill, his wild, emotional game has its teachers in seizures It fails his examination, and if he asks for a second chance she agrees a retest with an accompanied piece.
Il-lac protests, did not snooty to mix play egos his freethinking violin with the piano, but these are their conditions. Take 'em or flunk. So he breaks in the piano department and announces that he will give the opportunity a lucky student to work with his sublime self. Heh.
At home, Yoo-jin sits back with a hypnotherapy recording that tries to prove its effectiveness by making him believe an onion is a delicious apple. It is not, and Yoo-jin said the hypnotherapy to be hogwash. He steps onto the balcony for some air, but it is not quite as fresh as he wants; Peering over the adjoining balcony, he gags on the hill of garbage sit there and the mysterious ooze leaking under the door.
Yoo-jin to Nae-il pound door and burst in her filth disgusted nothing to do about it. He armed himself with detergent and engaged to work, as Nae-il and tries to keep to argue everything, down to the day-old mud transition for food. (Meta-joke: There are moldy bread there by Kim Tak-gu Square; Joo-won in acted Baker King Kim Tak-gu .) Finally, he pushes them outside so that he can finish without interruption , and a back- breaking cleaning day later their place is spotless.
Nae-il knock away happily at her piano, and while they increased description (it's a love song based on their relationship, she says), he tells her to continue playing. Already she has forgotten how they played it before, because it is prone to improvise, but also how he corrects wrong notes, he smiles and thinks: ". She plays all their own way, but it's not bad" He enjoys their game, scroll his hand start back and forth as he begins to conduct silently along.
Dean song Mina sits on a sample of a student orchestra in, not much in the scene as the other happens, I am always happy to listen to some Dvorak. (The longish musical performances were a favorite of mine in the original, so I'm happy to see that they have been.) She is cooking an idea in her head, because in addition to it a proposal for their employees takes: an orchestra to cultivate their school to become brand.
do teacher is skeptical, pointing out that the students want to focus on their individual goals like school and competitions, but Dean Mina plan is already under way, and they recruited a formidable ally in their cause : world-famous conductor Franz Streseman. We see him land at the airport, and while he's supposed to be a German, I'm rather glad to see that they look actor Baek Yoon-Shik , like his normal self strange without the use Wigs have allowed or colored contacts. He speaks Korean in a cutely stilted manner, but with a foreign accent.
Almost immediately, they lose Streseman who either missed or accompanying school evades and asks a taxi driver it away to any place to take with "good water" (ie many hotties ). Ha. Pervert Maestro is back!
Too bad that the taxi driver takes him to a place with good literal water, and it ends in a picturesque riverfront. LOL. Streseman admits: "Well, the water is well."
Yoo-jin is summoned to meet with the teacher Ahn Nae-il as his duet partner imagines. He can be heard at the thought horrified and the windows do teachers a tantrum had expected, and is out of tune that Yoo-jin is not as difficult as it was with him.
Yoo-jin is a duet not interested, however, and will leave. But teachers Ahn has a few tricks up his sleeve, saying that Yoo-jin has already been converted from a ditch teacher he wants to be from another ditched? That would make him quite the reputation.
Yoo-jin asks: "Are you blackmailing me now?" Teacher Ahn merrily replies, "Yes." And then he dangles an irresistible carrot: If Yoo-jin met with the duet, he will let him out of the rest of his lessons with an A + grade.
So Yoo-jin agrees to the deal, and gets for two pianos with Nae-il to work on Mozart's Sonata. It's a mess from the beginning, and worse than Nae-il to be a sloppy player, is that they hardly know they screwed up. Moreover, it is not very easy to read music, all by ear instead of learning.
They work all afternoon and at night, to Nae-il hunger is complaining and whining to end the session. Yoo-jin is too tired, but forces them back to the bank, because their reading difficulties mean that it has completely memorize it. And the moment that he forces her hand toward the piano, Nae-il flashes back to a memory-her hand is pushed to the keys, in a stern voice ordering them to continue.
Something snapped and she barks, "I said not to do!" And then CHOMP! She bites her Yoo-jin forearm. Crying, she gathers her things and leaves the room.
Violinist Il-lac, now is for his test for a companion still in the hunt. He wanted to the students in the piano department and corners Yoo-jin on his way out of practice, so that his case to a deflected Yoo-jin on.
So while Il-lac busts to prove from his violin, how great he is, Yoo-jin registered hardly his game. He's too busy thinking about Nae-il outbreak, and now the frustrated words he threw with similar words barked their way clinking unpleasant to him by teachers Do. This is an unpleasant parallelism. Yoo-jin goes away deep in thought, leave a insulted Il-lac to shout that he can find a better pianist, harrumph.
Yoo-jin comes home and slams on Nae-il's door, but gets no answer. So he sets out on your dinner to cook, and if Nae-il arrives in the hallway and sees his door open, it can not help but follow their nose the smell of delicious food. The plate is placed for them on the counter, and she falls for the bait-She has scarcely chow down appears as Yoo-jin.
She's ready to bolt as he promises not to be mean or to force their practice, and Nae-il digs in practically drooling when he offers her to make something even better tomorrow ... if it does a duet with him. She is reluctant because he was impatient with how slowly the piece was to memorize, he promises not to be angry, and adds that he recorded her part, learn to help her.
So he puts them to listen to the to the recording, but then bounces the smell of her dirty hair horror. Nae-il see nothing wrong with their two washes-a-week regimen, while too heavy, do not try to gag. It is insisted from totally clean with her into the bathroom, as he furiously the mud Shampoos away while it is.
Maestro Stresemen is meanwhile on Haneum campus, but keeps on the downlow his presence. He observed furtively students in lessons and lessons that frankly a clever way is to draw our attention to our supporting cast. It is our Rocker Geiger with a disregard for the classical conventions that tiny counterpoint, which is smaller than her instrument, and the timpanist, which seems to be a bundle of nerves; he comes to photos of them gasp, apparently to keep tabs.
The duet ahead for Yoo-jin and Nae-il, and while he still gives instructions to her left and right, Yoo-jin temperament is no longer an issue. Their expertise is better, but he thinks in discontent that feeling is flat: "The game is more accurate, but what went wrong"
Streseman makes his rounds unofficial campus and stops Dean song Mina in the distance, to see his eyes softening. His memory takes him back to her younger days when Mina was a piano student and he had been taken with her beauty and her talent. He thinks that it is so beautiful as ever, "and you make my heart race as always." But he approach not to admire the election from afar.
The attempt to root his dissatisfaction to see Yoo-jin decides on a new approach and says Nae-il the way to play them want. She is only too happy, but reminds him of his statement that requires a duet cooperation. He replies that he will meet them adapt, and encourages them to play but dictated her heart.
teacher Ahn for her lesson comes just then, and Yunjin says with a smile. "Let's have fun"
So with a fresh outburst of joy, begins Nae-il the piece, and Yoo-jin plays along while thinking: "I knew from the start that in this game, the little one was something special, because they played their own way I know all your habits, so I'll fit you I can.. only fit "
His eyes stay on Nae-il as they play, predicting where they will flow, where they will hold back:". And here, where she flies Cantabile like singing "
he has to think of his childhood under Viera learning, a key piece of the wisdom of his teacher conveys memories now. "the toes are the first to feel moved the toes. begin not to fidget able to cope with the increasing feelings. "
on the other hand, Nae-il viewed Yoo-jin on, remembering his promise to match it, no matter what they does. They have been goofily before. Him damning, but now she is good and enthusiastic
, how they play, Streseman observe breaks outside the practice room.
Yoo-jin revists his earlier vision, where he had to tear through the woods, lost and insecure. He picks up the empty box of reeds, quiet and sunny, and begins by slowly walking, until he comes to a clearing. In the center there is Nae-il, sit at a piano, playing her heart out.
Yoo-jin narrative recalls its opening voiceover, of how his childhood thoughts go to the music-filled streets of Europe. He had the body, Maestro Viera domain than to be the only place for "real classical music": "In this insufficiently I had thought that I could find no sense in playing pleasure or value in the music space."
But now we see Yoo-jin looking at the turmoil of the same joy that embodies Nae-il, positively inspired. "Teacher Viera", he thinks. "Perhaps here, too, there is something I could do. My heart flutters."
In Yoo-jin dream vision, he comes into the clearing and Nae-il approaches at the piano again, that Liszt song to play. She turns to him and smiles face. He smiles.
COMMENTS
I'll be the first to admit that I was worried about a Nodame Cantabile remake, while the possibilities are excited simultaneously. I have gone through so many frustrated expectations and flopped adjustments that I knew better than to expect the best, but the best was always the hope. And with this premiere of Cantabile Tomorrow , I allow myself the hope, perhaps best to feel the still, after all.
I say that as a fan of the original anime and drama, a lifelong fan of classical music, and a fan of almost every single major in the cast. This is disappoint a lot of fandoms potentially. There was always a greater chance that would be disappointed than fulfilled expectations, and I was prepared. So you can imagine how relieved I am to find Cantabile Tomorrow hits the sweet spot of what I wanted from this to be show, true to the original, but not soulless scene-for-scene Carbon Copy. This is to demand an incredibly big challenge, but it is what I wanted-because it is not too much, not to be too little, and only perfectly consistent with my hopes.
Most of the major fronts, this drama met or exceeded my expectations. I will (reluctantly) admit that one of my biggest hopes is not quite living on its potential to that a find Shim Eun-kyung in Nae-il role because I act for them bit too wide and exaggerated what this drama is -introspective, poignant and so thoughtful about his silence, as those strokes over filling with music. It could be that Ueno Juri was just so good that everything in this first episode as an attempt to feel her Nodame re-create, so I'm going to withhold judgment until we get to know them. I actually find Shim Eun-kyung effective in the quieter, less comedic moments, and I hope that the show will attract these blows over the history gel on.
(Only as a note, I do not want the rest of Cantabile Tomorrow spend a comparison with Nodame Cantaibile , because after all, this drama has to stand on its own feet, but I realize that in a first sequence number comparison is inevitable. But going forward, I'll do anything to keep detailed information about this drama only because she deserves to be evaluated on their individual conditions, in particular, I'm sure , a swath of viewers have no acquaintance with all forms of Nodame .)
I was actually Shim Eun-kyung, feeling wary of Joo-won expect to love, so it is with surprise that I find completely in Joo-won view of Yoo-jin, sucked me that stirred an emotional reaction in me that I did not expect. I loved the character and Chiaki thought Hiroshi Tamaki in part was wonderful, but for some reason I enjoyed Nodame without an emotional tug to feel absolutely. In this episode, I was caught off guard with an actual tear-tingling-my-eyelids feel and that makes me excited, which is to come.
The show is somewhat less manga-esque and slapstick, and while in the previous versions was fine with me, I am perfectly fine, they see here clear. This drama is less broad and more true-to-life, and if that means a reduction in the quirky manga-esque violence, I'm on it! I know that the punching and kicking and Nodame overturning were meant in the name of comedy, and that the series was not actually promotion as his personal punching bag knock our hero to our heroine, but it was a member, the made me uncomfortable in the live-action J-drama, so I'm happy to see neutralized these blows. There is an element of the pushing-in-the-name-of-comedy, but at least he does not hit them in the face.
This is the third time that I am to unfold this story to see, and most of the big points are repeated from earlier versions, but each iteration brings a new aspect that adds to the world, rather than piling on layoffs. I am pleased to see how this production expanded to its interpretation.
(Question: I toyed be used with the idea of a list of classic pieces of creation in the drama, but there are actually so many that I wonder if . it is really necessary or feasible Let me know if this is something you would like to see here, and especially if you are willing to identify songs and keep a list updated
uPDATE: list is here) [1945009!]
