The flashback scene that we got in this episode was adorably cute. Logically, we all knew that our guide pair had some happy times before things all to hell went in a handbasket. We have shown only very few of these good times. In flashback we see Chang-min Jin-hee depression with tenderness and patience react. Most importantly, this may be the first time that Jin-hee aware a happy memory to remember from her marriage. And by recognizing that there are happy memories, can stop them see themselves as victims.
So what is crippling is a victim mentality that from their perspective, everything went wrong all blame another. The victims see themselves as helpless, if this is true or not. Your problems are caused by other people or by circumstances. Beyond their control
By acknowledging that she was not a victim, but a person who both hurt someone and was hurt by someone, Jin-hee has authorized it. She is now free to re-evaluate their past with Chang-min with a balanced perspective and weigh realistically the possible advantages and disadvantages of a possible new future with him.
While this is all well and good, I want to do that Flashback has a little more than confirm that Jin-hee to hyperemotionality and that Chang-min was prone supportive until ... he was not chosen. But asking us to fill in the details, there are potential emotional depths wasted that are explored instead of being on the table. How much more weight and grief I would feel if the show actually recorded in detail for us in the rich tapestry, so that I could see the progression of the vertigo of new love to bitterness and disappointment? How much more invested personally I would be in these two people, when I knew the background story that it is unique as individuals, to draw in my head for them instead of the generalized background that I need?
Just as we round the last three episodes, the show seems to tell me that Jin-hee and past issues of Chang-min are achieved properly. The overly emotional woman has learned to control their emotions and has found by a doctor their goal in life. So it will never fall into such despair and self-doubt, as previously. The financially ailing man is now employed doctor and will be financially strapped into the future. The bitchy mother-in-law no longer be bitchy because she had an epiphany after her husband's death. All problems are solved, the road is straight and clear, the green light to go.
And I suppose the logic makes sense ... in a sloppy, pat fashion.
Is it emotionally satisfying enough? I do not know. But I'll be happy that when we have seen the last of the melo, and when the show remembers the "com" to return to rom-com set.
